ARTIST STATEMENT:
You know in life those tragic moments that are so full of comedy, misguided attempts gone awry, good intentions with terrible outcomes. You know that feeling, the awareness of something being unhealthy yet ingesting it anyhow with disregard for any later consequences. This is a taste of some of what you will find within this collection of works. It is a flawed carnival of creatures that are misplaced, displaced and confused within these painted worlds.

These are Moments that rise up from the darkness in life which we can all at some time or another relate to. These are the rock bottom babies born out of wrong doings and hard times. These are vicious poison snake biters we all battle in life. These are the poison mushroom fungi that grow on us as the blown out wishes from weeds entangle our lives. Rising from the murk a swamp queen dream all full of fungus yet she uses the poison, the illness in life to gain strength to keep on living. These are the golden carrot dreamers that hung for too long. These are the caged moon catchers trying to control things beyond their control. These are the self poisoned bloated beasties, These are the lost, the used and the jealous moody bruised tired souls. These are paintings of a morose & unsociable nature and with that I give you A MURKY MENAGERIE all new works by Angie Mason.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Angie Mason (b.1973) received a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC,NY in 1997. Since then, she has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally in both Solo and group exhibits in such places as New York, Los Angeles, Cannes, Berlin and London. She visually explores the twisted combinations of opposites through the creation of slightly off characters using them as a way to paint truths about being human. Often times in the work one finds creatures who are facing their demons or are in fact the demon themselves. There is a balance of light and dark that intermingle in her work creating a visual playground bringing to life quirky characters that are beautifully rendered yet with a painterly hand gives them an innocent raw touch.
A chaotic disjointed upbringing helped form her visual imagination and sensibilities at an early age. Angie’s works are strong in color and heavy in character concepts. Various influences are found in her work ranging from such things as nature, relationships, dreams, memories, failure and health.
Within these painted worlds, one finds a realm dark and wonderful where Angie’s saturnine moody bruised soul creatures exist with their touching sad yet hysterical scenarios. Mason’s works are both horrific and humorous, yet speaks of what it means to be human. Her melancholy menagerie of characters and worlds are a funny, whimsical, dark and tragic view at the wonderful mess of life.
