Art Show Alert - Parlor Gallery celebrates 10 years with massive group show!

Art Show Alert - Parlor Gallery celebrates 10 years with massive group show!

Honored to have a piece in this show!
The New work I created seen above in the promo as well as below. See more details below. And I hope to see you at the opening!

TITLE:
'Rooted Dreamers dwell on Gliders,
sometimes making life feel harder.

Feeling stuck and struggling,
looking up can be disheartening.

The Gliders float by so freely,
making one feel quite uneasy.

They see the world and pass us by,
rooted in our ways we cry.

Oh how wondrous it would be,
to fly above the world with ease.

But blossoms grow and life is lush,
there is beauty that’s surrounding us.

Sometimes we forget this
because struggles feel so tall.

But throughout difficult times
there’s a song inside us all.

We push forward growing anew,
for life is beautiful here too!'

Angie Mason often creates character driven works that explore psychological, emotional, dark yet humorous situations inspired by life. Her darkly sweet playful cartoon like characters navigate through worlds in vibrant colors to muted gray pencils works.

For this exhibition, the 'Weathered Souls' collection, a series of works will include stormy characters in the form of drawings, paintings, sculptures and jewelry she likes to call "wearable art". These moody weathered souls are worn out beauties yet have a spark of hope and fire left in them. Having gone through life storms both metaphorically and literally Mason's collection of Weathered Souls is a reflection on those times.

In the artists words: "I visually explore the balance of opposites between darkness and light / humor and sadness through the creation of character narrative works. The work reflects how I cope and see things within our modern world. Much of the work stems from personal life experiences, dreams, memories ,fairy tales, to everything I encounter.
I filter all these things through as ingredients toward cooking up my personal visions which have a flavor I like to refer to as Grotesque Folk Pop. This melancholy menagerie of characters and worlds are a funny, whimsical, dark and tragic view at the wonderful mess of life. The human experience is full of many strange tragic moments that are sad yet, at the same time, so full of comedy. It is this mix of comedy and tragedy that I enjoy fusing together. Humor and horror married together to give birth to a family of characters that are my reflections on the world. By utilizing my characters I aim to paint truths about being human creating a balance or a tug of war between good and evil, hope and despair all while telling stories and navigating through my life. These character documentations are my modern fairy tale I am weaving together, growing it with time and experience. My characters ,me and the viewer are all on a journey together."

ABOUT THE ARTIST

This chaotic, disjointed upbringing helped inform her visual imagination and sensibilities. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York City. Angie Mason has been involved in several published book projects which showcased her artworks (*The Lowbrow Tarot Project) as well having her work in a number of private collections. She has even had her  beloved hand sculpted and painted 'Rotten Tooth Gang' earrings featured in IFC's original show from David Cross The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret worn by actress Amber Tamblyn. Fans were asked to "hand pick" their top ten artworks from the 30 original drawings which Angie created for Project 30. Encouraging fans to "Be a part of the process!" by liking and commenting on their favorites. Project 30 - The Hand Picked 10 was utilizing social media platforms as way to interact in ways never used before during Angie's creative process. It was a fun interactive project that now is coming to the moment of truth the solo exhibition showcasing all 30 drawings and the Hand Picked 10 paintings! Come out July 7th for the opening reception and be part of the Finishing Process.
Angie Mason was born in Northern New Jersey but was uprooted quite often during her younger years. This chaotic, disjointed upbringing helped inform her visual imagination and sensibilities. Currently Angie took root in Northern New Jersey where she resides and works. She is a 1997 graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her extensive body of work has centered on a visual examination of modern life in a unique and sometimes frightening look through a ‘grotesque folk-pop lens’ of character narratives. Angie has had solo and group exhibitions in both museum and galleries throughout the United States and internationally.

Angie visually explores the darkness and light we face in life through the creation of character narrative works. Primarily Angie presents the work as paintings and drawings but also works with a wide range of mediums to create alternate visions such as dolls, sculptures, custom jewelry and wearable art. "As a visual person having a wide scope of all visual angles allows for me to constantly examine ideas in new ways that allow for greater discovery and growth within myself and the work." Focusing on twisted combinations and dual opposites (such as sweet vs. sour, happy vs. sad or life vs. death) she paints truths about being human. Varied influences are found within her work ranging from such things as nature, love, relationships, dreams, memories, humor, loss and health to name a few. These mixed influences cause a balance of light and dark that intermingle with each other creating a visual playground, bringing to life quirky characters that are beautifully rendered yet with a painterly hand giving them an innocent raw touch. Mason’s works are both horrific and humorous, yet speaks of what it means to be human.

Mason’s undeniable originality has garnered her attention from publishers and collectors alike, such as actress and poet Amber Tamblyn and the multifaceted Aprella among them. Her list of expanding accolades range from the 'EdgyCute' art survey book by Harry Saylor and the collaboration 'Feedback Project' where Adrian Stout of The Tiger Lillies, composed original music based on Mason’s artwork. Mason was also part of the 23 renowned artists chosen to be a part of the critically acclaimed Lowbrow Tarot Project exhibition ( 2010) and book (2012). My painting 'Swing The Heartache' will be showcased on the May postcard for the year long campaign it will also be shown during the prestigious Carousel Awards in Asbury Park, NJ!

NOW UPCOMING FEB. 11th At Last Rites Gallery in NYC I will be taking part in a great benefit Art Fusion Event!

 ART FUSION FOR ICAF
NEW YORK, NY (February 2012)- Last Rites Gallery hosts a multi-part Art Fusion charity event benefitting The International Children’s Art Fund (ICAF).
Believing that creativity is a vital force for all of humanity, Last Rites Gallery supports ICAF in funding art programs for children across the world. Last Rites owner, Paul Booth, has raised thousands of dollars for ICAF since his first involvement with them in 2008, and foundedThe Art Fusion Experiment as a means of benefitting charities and connecting artists worldwide. The Art Fusion Experiment demonstrates through collaborative painting, contemporary artist’s ability to work together as a community.
In this spirit of sharing & global community, Last Rites is hosting a large-scale collaborative painting project, the results of which will remain on display for a two week period, concluding on the 25th with a benefit auction of the work. Fifteen artists around the world have received 24” x 30” canvas panels to sketch using pencil/ charcoal/ ink in order to design and lay the groundwork for a finished painting. The panels will then be sent back to Last Rites for a select group of artists to collaboratively paint & finalize.
The project is a mash up of the heaviest hitters in the realms of fine art, tattooing and illustration- some of them familiar faces at Last Rites, as well as special guests. The event will enable some of the most talented artists around globe to work together for the first time… and for a good cause! This is an interesting chance for both the participant & viewer to see how the ideas & vision of one artist is executed by another. This also enables artists an opportunity to step outside their own comfort zone & tackle new subject matter. Through this joining of talent, an entirely new artist arises, that only exists in this single Art Fusion session.
Participating Artists:
Ana Bagayan, Angie Mason, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Beau Stanton, Billy Norrby, Brian Despain, Brian Murphy, Buddy Nestor, Chris Mars, David MacDowell, David Stoupakis, Dan Harding, Dan Dos Santos, Darrin White, Eric Richardson, Ewelina, Fred Harper, Gaia, Genevive Zacconi, Jason D'Aquino, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jennybird Alcantara, JoKa, Lady Pink, Mark Elliott, Matt Rota, Mia Araujo, Michael Mararian, Nick Baxter, Paul Booth, Scott G Brooks, Stefano Alcantara, Timothy Boor, Tin, Vincent Castiglia, Yoko D'Holbachie and more!

ANormal Magazine Interview! Original English version....

Visit ANormal Magazine and see the published interview if you read Spanish or below is the original questions and answers I was given and gave in English :D. ENJOY! And always thank you for following along on my visual journey!

INTERVIEW: ANGIE MASON FOR ANORMAL MAGAZINE

1  •    Let’s start off with a little bio, tell us a little bit about you:

To give a bit of a back story I grew up in a disjointed chaotic life early on which truly led me to the deep relationship I have with art to this day as it brought  balance to my life by taking refuge in the creation of my own worlds and characters. Art saved my life many times and gives my life meaning. Ever since I was young and made this discovery it has brought me balance and I keep navigating life by visually exploring ideas and concepts with a bit of written word thrown in the mix. I have a background in illustration having studied both fine art and illustration at Parsons School of Design back in the mid to late 90s then graduated and worked within various creative industries such as  publishing and internet companies doing creative projects like illustration, character design and web design for them. In 2001 I began exhibiting my paintings and drawings publicly which continued to grow and I now show in galleries all over the United States as well as internationally. I love cats especially my own who I have taught various silly pet tricks such as playing dead, waving hello on command and rolling over. I have two very different looking thumbs though that's not enough for me to join the circus still I keep trying ;).

2  •    How is a typical work day in the Angie Mason's life?

Typically I wake up most days in the early morning hours groggy eyed still dreamy I start my day with a home made cup of cappuccino or tea some kind of caffeine as I am sadly addicted to the stuff though I do love the taste of the drinks I consume. Some days I work at a day job designing things for other people to basically make money to help fund my other addiction which is art. I find that by having a some what stable life I can be more productive with my art and personal goals. Typically every day is not typical since most days I spend inside my head which mostly I don't mind some days it can be lonely but often times I enjoy the imaginary realm of my brain that conjures up characters to keep me company as I make money to finance their birth and spreading ;)

3   •    When did you first get interested in art and what’s the best part of being an artist?

Like most young children I always had a love for making pictures... but as time grew on I grew even more serious about my connection and relationship toward art. I think the best part about being an artist is having the power to create an entire universe through your mind, heart and hands. Seeing a concept and idea just thought off the top of your head and to be able to make that real has always been amazing and a total gift to have! I am so happy to have dedicated myself to this path!

4•    Who or what inspires you in your personal life and work and what message do you want to communicate in your paintings, drawings and sculptures?

Life inspires me. Seriously everything plays a part like...nature, music, minutia, personal life experiences, a strangers conversation next to me... it all filters together in my brain. It all acts as an ingredient to the images I cook up.   My paintings are communicating different things at different times mostly there is some kind of emotional element at the core of each piece. I don't like to dissect each work publicly I feel like that is just like a magician telling you how they did their trick... the magic is lost. I like people to have a personal experience and make a stronger connection to the work and characters rather than getting tainted with my minutia as to why I created a piece. I am sure it can have it's place to discuss direct references to my life and work but typically I like to have the mystery intact not just with my work but with others work as well. I want to create my own meanings and have a deeper connection to my works and others whether that be visual, poetry or music. I want people to feel like they are an explorer and make their discoveries when looking at my works. With that said I do think I hope to express different core emotional states in my works that are universal. It would be lovely to have my art be thought of as medicine helping someone feel better by looking at a piece.

5•    How would you describe your style?

I don't like to pigeon hole or categorize things typically but everyone does so to answer this I would say my works have a Grotesque Folk Pop feeling a word I have coined which mixes three elements which I feel are apparent within my works and feels like a nice fit for me.

6  •    Your characters. Where do they come from?

My characters are born out of life experiences. A character can be some one I know, a personal self portrait or a world view on something presently going on. They all come from different places but all from living life.

7  •    Your portfolio is an exquisite mixture of symbols and methods. Please can you describe your design process and favorites techniques?

Thank you very much. My process typically starts out in my sketchbooks. This is where the birthing process happens. Once an idea is born onto paper I then choose which ones I want to nurture and grow into a larger more detailed version of a sketch. I like many different techniques and don't hold myself to one but painting is a great great love since I was young! Acrylic and oil paint are the main mediums I use for paintings but also enjoy water colors. But honestly, as long as I can make visual marks with whatever supplies I have available to me I happy to make my marks. I have this drive inside me if I didn't have proper art materials available to me I would figure something out. I just need to make stuff. I have to. Since as far back as I can remember I needed to make visual releases... so much so I would carve pictures into my mother's good furniture. Exorcising my demons I suppose which got me into big trouble.

8 •    Which of your projects has given you more satisfaction?

Most Satisfaction: Honestly I love seeing when I work on a large body of work such as a solo show and witness the growth of all the works involved come together from a simple passing thought sketch to a fully realized body of work and seeing it all come to fruition hanging side by side on the gallery wall gives the greatest joy as well as being able to share my visions with others. I have been very fortunate to be able to do so!

9  •    What are your future plans? Are you working on any particular projects right now?

A recent project that I just finished at the end of August was my brand new redesigned website www.angiemason.com which I also designed and put together. I added a ton of images and information to hopefully keep all the people who visit engaged and excited. I am working on very special project that for now I am calling Project 30 this will be special because it will be involving the people who follow my work. It's in the infancy stages right now... but out of this I hope to have a brand new solo show and body of work. Any galleries reading this and interested please feel free to contact me for more information at angie@angiemason.com. I am also a part of the Lowbrow Tarot Project which will be releasing a fantastic art book and tarot deck in 2012 so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that or stay updated by following my facebook fan page -https://www.facebook.com/AngieMasonArt or my blog http://www.brainspills.blogspot.com/ :). I have some group shows coming up such as the John Water's Inspired Art Show at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art this November 2011 and then another group show in New Jersey at the Shore Institute for Contemporary Art in December 2011. For 2012 mostly I am pretty open and just focused on Project 30 growing it and showing it ;).

10 •    Finally, where are you right now while you answer this interview?

My art studio of course :) with my cat Nervil who is the best studio assistant ever though he sleeps on the job a lot!
